Your Role

Being a Director at CR is a lot like running your own business.  An entrepreneurial spirit and strong business acumen is a huge advantage when it comes to successfully managing 6 core areas of responsibility: Operations, Talent, Finance, Marketing, Design, and Legal.

As the Director of our Higher Education team, you will report directly to our Chief Operations Officer and provide clear leadership, vision, and strategic direction to our Higher Education architecture team members and strategic college and university clients.  With a focus on delivering profitable higher education projects like student housing, dining halls, mixed-use developments, residence life, etc., this Director is an enthusiastic change agent and dynamic "go-to" thought leader in the firm and in the field.


What You Will Do


  • Provide cradle-to-grave leadership of architectural projects to ensure that utilization, schedule, and budget/profitability targets are being met
  • Effectively lead your assigned team and encourage quality, coordination, and profitability
  • Provide proactive workload management and allocation of resources
  • Quickly begin to engage and build relationships with existing clients and suggest improvements for relationship and scope
  • Provide recommendations to improve efficiency and/or quality of the program


  • Determine staffing needs for your assigned team and individual projects based on the current and projected workload
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of prospective CR staff while ensuring alignment of CR's core values and provide clear performance expectations and management/reviews to your team
  • Lead by example and foster a continuous learning culture by encouraging communication and the sharing of ideas and technical knowledge through mentoring, continuing education opportunities
  • Act as a CR ambassador and enthusiastically motivate and mentor for professional development and licensure


  • Work with C-Level and Marketing/Business Development teams to develop an annual business plan to advance the firm's mission, growth, and branding of the higher education program
  • Responsible for meeting projected revenue goals
  • Report and present the financial health of your assigned team monthly


  • Leverage our Business Development team on new business development efforts
  • Assist in the development of proposals, review submittals, RFQ's, RFP's, interview process etc. 
  • Build, strengthen and nurture relationships with new and existing clients with the goal of creating long-term partnerships and repeat business
  • Promote CR's brand and market expertise by serving as a thought leader in the industry and internally through involvement in speaking engagements, professional organizations, white paper creation, etc.


  • Successfully manage the design vision of your strategic clients and lead design discussions
  • Encourage uniformly high design and production standards and monitor projects to ensure that quality and production standards are met for all design and contract documents


  • Manage risk with effective contract expectations with client and consultants
  • Manage risk relative to quality control


Your Qualifications

  • Professional degree (Master or Bachelor) in Architecture from an accredited program, or like industry experience
  • Licensed Architect is preferred but not required
  • Minimum 15 years of post-graduate industry experience is preferred
  • Minimum 5 years experience managing a studio, office or practice group while accountable for planning, profit, revenue and resource management
  • Deep understanding of the higher education market especially in areas of forecasting, innovation, operational improvement, planning, and strategic positioning
  • Experience in residence life, student housing, dining halls, etc. strongly preferred
  • Technical competence and skill in construction documentation/administration
  • Experience working with a business development team to secure and grow new and existing clients
  • Collaborative champion of client relationships and team management with ability to quickly build trust
  • Dynamic communicator to both internal and client stakeholders while influencing and inspiring others
  • Self-starter with effective problem solving skills, strong business acumen and strategic thinker
  • Reputation as an expert in the industry and active in professional/industry associations is preferred
  • Ability to travel as needed
